The Dungeons and dragons the movie is now available for streaming – at least in the US – which means more people have had a chance to see the fun, imaginative family adventure movie that wasn’t made by Disney/Marvel. If you’ve already watched it or just want something different to scratch the action itch, then we’ve put together a list for you.
We’ve got four stories where a bunch of jerks get sucked into an adventure full of comedy and good drama – they’re not all fantasy movies, they just have the right vibe, and they’re all available on the best streaming services.
Don’t forget we have more of the best Netflix movies, the best HBO Max movies, and the best Disney Plus movies in our guides!
Galaxy Quest
That riff on Star Trek it’s a really fun and honest take on sci-fi TV shows. It tells the story of the fired cast from an old show who are kidnapped by aliens who have based their entire civilization on science-fiction TV broadcasts.
With Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver and Sam Rockwell as actors from beyond their depths, it’s a fun twist on the old formula as these unemployed actors try to actually save the galaxy. It’s incredibly funny, satirical, has some really moving action and stakes, and comes in at 100 minutes and ends before surpassing its premise.
Streaming on Netflix and Paramount Plus in the US, and available to rent or purchase on Prime Video and Apple TV in the UK.
Forward
This movie is close to Dungeons and dragons movie you find in this list. It’s a Pixar spin on a medieval fantasy world that still bears all the hallmarks of an American coming-of-age movie: road trips, sibling feuds, suburbia and garbage-raising unicorns.
Starring Tom Holland (Spider-Man: There’s no way home) and Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) as brothers embark on an adventure to resurrect their father and perhaps find themselves along the way, this is a family movie worth watching.
Streaming on Disney Plus worldwide.
Jumanji: Welcome to the jungle
oh, Jumanji. While the 1995 classic is a great thing in itself, Welcome to the jungle offers a slightly lighter take on the story, with its own great twists. This video game-inspired comedy follows a group of teenagers who are transported to a game cartridge during a brief stop.
The teenagers are transformed into the game’s four main avatars – played by Dwayne Johnson, Karen Gillan, Jack Black and Kevin Hart. With plenty of body-swapping humor (the in-game characters don’t exactly match the real-world version), gamified glitches, and brother Jonas trapped in the jungle, this is a fun update to the classic Jumanji story with some grateful nods to its predecessor.
Streaming on Hulu in the US and Prime Video in the UK.
Goonies
This 1985 adventure film is a classic treasure hunt. It’s about a group of teenagers who find an old treasure map in their parents’ attic that apparently once belonged to a famous 17th-century pirate, whom they naturally set out to hunt – hoping to raise funds to save their homes from demolition. Expect pirate ships, secret passages, biker gangs and lots of gems.
It’s a great showcase for the child actors of the cast, some of which you’re familiar with today from the blockbuster franchises: Josh Brolin (Marvel’s Thanos), Sean Astin (Marvel’s Samwise), Lord of the Rings) and Ke Huy Quan (Waymond Wang z Everything Everywhere Everything At Once).
Streaming on HBO Max in the US and Prime Video in the UK.
