Steam has tweaked the process of downloading free PC or DLC games to make it a bit more convenient, and it’s a change that has been met with a great deal of luck (or bewilderment in a few cases).
If you are a regular Steam user, you will surely recall that if a game is free on Steam and you want its title to reach for it, you have no choice but to select the game, which speeds up the installation process. You can then give it up after a short wait for the gears to spin a bit, but that’s a bit unnecessary idiocy.
Now Valve has introduced an “Add to Library” button that you can click to add a product to your game library, and that’s it – no need to cancel an installation you don’t want.
Similarly with the free DLC, when you do this the game starts – and now instead, you can just click to download the content and you’re done; clearly easier and more convenient process.
Analysis: Jumping for joy amid bouts of head scratching
There was a lot of fun in what is actually a small but useful fix. Indeed, our sister site Computer player (opens in a new tab) he noted that it had happened and declared it to be an “absolutely majestic” change for the better, no less.
Others, like Reddit, sang similar praises, amid comments that it took Valve long enough, and that really should have happened years ago. They scratch their heads or shrug their shoulders with other players why some people make such a big deal of it.
Like one inhabitant Reddit (opens in a new tab) put it: “Wait what? On the one hand, why did it take so long? On the other hand, closing this dialog was so hard?
Well, frankly, it wasn’t a particularly big deal, but it’s still a quality-of-life improvement that we’re glad to see happening on Steam, especially when there may be a whole bunch of DLC chunks for download (which could mean the user isn’t turning back without having to suffer repeatedly from running the game).
